Summer
2010
At last an update of the newsletter. Students have been
reminding me to get the photos of the last show on the
website (Applause! Applause!) Now at last the deed has
been done!
As usual there’s lots to tell you about. I have
previously mentioned the opportunity we offer students
who have passed their grade 8 exam in Musical Theatre
or Performance Arts to train to teach Performing Arts.
Well I’m very proud to announce that Lydia Davidson
is now an Associate of Trinity College London (ATCL)
having passed each of the 3 units at distinction level.
She has been working as a member of the creative team
at TAPA as a fully fledged teacher of Performing Arts
for a full term now, which is very rewarding for everyone
who was involved with her training.
Sadly for us, but happily
for Lydia, she will be leaving us at the end of the
summer as she has been offered a place on the Musical
Theatre degree course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire
in London. We wish her all the best and know she will
keep in touch.
There are 3 other students who are very close to finishing
this training course and 3 new entrants waiting to start
the process in September. Good luck to them all.
There have been some staff changes this year. We are
really delighted to welcome Katie Gregson to the team,
have a look at the ‘teacher profile’ page
for TAPA AM. Katie is really musical, plays piano and
is studying Musical Theatre for her degree at Newcastle.
She will be coming along to lead the singing sessions
for the morning group who have already met her twice,
and given her the big thumbs up.
Drama sessions for all
of TAPA’s students will be lead by Jack Reed who
has completed his ATCL training and is awaiting his
results. Jack has been offered a place at university
in London to continue training in Performing Arts but
has decided to defer his entry for a year to gain more
teaching experience and to promote his band. He is already
a valued member of the creative team and the students
are delighted that he is staying.
Summer school is almost upon us. This year we have asked
students which shows they would like to work on each
day. The favourites seem to be Glee, Oliver! and Joseph
& His Technicolour Dream Coat. We will make sure
that everyone’s favourite songs are included in
our programmes for the 2 weeks. All of the leaflets
about the summer school, plus an application form, can
be downloaded. Click on the link at the end of the newsletter.
(Phone me if you have problems on 01434 601049). Summer
school will run for the first two weeks of the holiday
only. Applications are coming in so make sure you send
your form soon as places are limited.
Work begins on our next
two productions after the half term holiday. TAPA AM
will be staging a musical play titled, Friendly Matches.
It is the next in a series which follows on from Three
Cheers for Mrs Butler which we performed in 2006. This
was a great success because it deals with school life
and all of the hilarious incidents which happen in the
course of an academic year. Friendly Matches will be
equally as endearing & entertaining. The show will
be the first we will stage at our rehearsal venue, Hexham
Middle School, so we are really looking forward to the
challenge of working in a different auditorium. It will
be a luxury to rehearse in the space you will ultimately
perform in. We’d love you to come and see the
show on Saturday 11th December 2010 at either 2pm or
6pm. Tickets will be on sale in September.
Footloose is the next project for TAPA PM. I am just
putting the audition packs together as the show will
be cast before we break up for the summer holidays.
This is a lively, teenage show which has the students
really excited! Songs such as, ‘Let’s Hear
it for the Boy’, ‘Holding on for a Hero’,
and the signature show song, ‘Footloose’
are really famous numbers which everyone wants to sing.
This show will be staged at the Queen’s Hall on
April 2nd 2011 (2pm & 6pm). Definitely worth coming
to see.
Well before I sign off
I’d like to wish the 20 students all the best
for their performance exams on 12th June, the first
day back after half term! I know they are well prepared
and will be looking forward to the results on the same
day.
If you would like to join TAPA please get in touch,
it doesn’t matter if you have no experience or
loads, there will be a warm welcome for all new members.
The proof that we do a good job is the fact that the
majority of our students came to see what TAPA was like
and stayed for an average of 3 years. Bet you’d
love it too!
Hope to see you soon.
